What's with the 1957?  I'm glad you asked.  I acquired a metal box of slides from my Grandmom White in 1990.  Upon inspection, I found photos my Dad had taken back in the '50s (mostly 1957) of family, friends, projects, and sites where he was stationed in the Army.

The slides were still in incredible shape and some of the shots were astounding.  I had a few blown up by a professional, but that was expensive.  So I decided to try and get them into the computer.  Believe it or not, I used a cheap handheld slide viewer and a Hi8 camcorder with a macro lens taped to it to capture these pictures. (This was before digital cameras.) A little touchup with Photoshop, and here's a little portfolio of what the world was like in the 1950s...

The most incredible - a beautiful shot of the Zugspitz mountains from a lake chalet in Austria.  (The 2nd location unknown.)

For years, I thought I had dreamed about a miniature city that Dad had taken us to when we were in Germany with him.  Then I found the proof!  It wasn't a dream, but an outdoor display in Maduradam, Netherlands.  Though it may look like the real thing, the first is a 6' high reproduction of the famous Peace Palace.  In the second of the "city" airport, you can see normal buildings and people in the background.
